About Composting Chickens

Let me introduce myself.

Hey all! I'm Shad and founder of Composting Chickens and Atitlan Organics.

I have 15 years experience in organic and commercial gardening and farming. I am also certified in Permaculture Design and have over 13 years experience in holistic site development and homesteading.

After graduating from Johns Hopkins University with a double major in Applied Mathematics and Psychology, I and my wife, Colleen, moved to Central America with only vague goals of farming at some point in the near future. In January of 2010, me and my partner Colleen moved onto a very small piece of land located in the traditional Mayan village of Tzununa, which is on the north shore of Lake Atitlán, in Guatemala. We have since developed the land into a small but profitable farming enterprise focused on salad and cooking greens, goat dairy products, and agrotourism.

More recently, Shad helped found a local non-profit in the Lake Atitlan Region that has already planted over 40k trees and supports a thriving local artisan cooperative. His newest passion project is the development of Duck Willow Farm, a solar powered duck paradise. Aside from all of this, Shad is an enthusiastic teacher who truly believes in the work he is doing, and can be found dancing in his garden in Tzununa.

Why did I start the Composting Chicken website?

I have set up the composting chicken site to share my experience and knowledge about homesteading. I have been homesteading for over 15 years, and I have had my share of problems that come with keeping chickens. I'll tell you a story.

When I first started, I desperately wanted to get chickens on my homestead. Having no experience, I went to my trusty homesteading library and my best friend google. It seemed that everything was saying the same thing: “Build a small coop, and enclose an area where the chickens can free range.” So that's exactly what I did.

What all those books and the grand old internet did not mention was what happens when your chickens actually begin ‘free ranging’. I realized that all free range chicken systems eventually fail. I have since solved these problems have learned how to turn my chickens in the fertility factory of my landscape, helping to build amazingly productive and diverse ecosystems.
